Combustion of polluted air takes place in a thermally insulated chamber at a minimum temperature of 750°C. The heat required to heat the combustion chamber at startup and to maintain the combustion temperature is provided by methane or LPG.
What reduces the energy consumption and costs required for operation is the energy recovery system, called "regenerative." The CTR regenerative thermal combustor, in fact, uses thermally conductive materials, in this case ceramics, known as "regeneration beds." These materials have the ability to absorb and store heat.
Heat from flue gas leaving the combustion chamber is used to heat the ceramic masses contained in a heat exchange tower. The incoming flue gas, passing over a second exchange tower that is already at temperature, in turn exchanges the stored heat provided by the hot flue gas that has already been purified.
Unlike two-chamber combustors, the CTR has a third stand-by chamber whose function is to ensure that there are no high concentrations of pollutant at the outlet during this flow reversal phase.
