Recycling is good for the environment, but workers in the waste treatment and recycling industry face major risks to their health. Some materials, such as scrap metal, electronic parts, batteries, waste oil and other chemicals, have components that pose a hazard. In addition, recycling operations generate dust and odors that can have serious health consequences. These dusts may contain microparticles of plastic, glass, biological or radioactive particles, toxic substances, and other respiratory irritants. Organic wastes can also be dispersed into the air in the form of "bioaerosols." In addition, many airborne dusts in waste treatment plants are highly flammable.
