Operation of regenerative thermal combustors

Coral Ctr Header 22

The thermal regenerative combustor (CTR) is a highly efficient plant designed to remove volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in industrial emissions by thermal oxidation. Thanks to the combustion chamber operating at high temperatures, generally above 750 °C, the pollutants are completely oxidized, transforming into harmless compounds such as CO₂ and H₂O. This thermal oxidation process ensures extremely effective purification, ideal for industrial applications that require high environmental standards.

What is a regenerative thermal combustor?

Regenerative thermal combustors owe the adjective regenerative to the fact that the heat from the flue gases leaving the combustion chamber is transferred to the ceramic masses contained in a first heat exchange tower; the incoming flue gases, passing over a second exchange tower that is already at temperature, receive the accumulated heat provided by the outgoing flue gases. A third stand-by chamber ensures that there are no fluctuations in pollutant output at the stack during the inversion phase of the chambers. This configuration provides a consistent reduction in energy consumption and effective emission control.

At Coral, two different models can be consulted:

  • Bicameral: have two heat exchange towers, at the time of the reversal of the IN/OUT cycle there is an instant when the flue gas does not pass through the combustion chamber and thus there is a peak emission at the stack. This drawback can be remedied by the inclusion of an airlock in which to store flue gases at the time of chamber inversion.
  • Tricamers: have three recovery towers, the third tower in stand-by mode allows flue gases to be sent to the stack, which are always purified in the combustion chamber.

Industrial applications of CTRs

CTRs are an ideal solution when traditional filters such as activated carbon filters are not cost-effective or effective, especially in situations of particularly troublesome high concentration or odoriferous emissions. Application areas include: chemical and pharmaceutical Industries, painting plants, the food sector with cooking or drying processes, and companies operating in sensitive settings such as urban centers or tourist areas.

Coral, with its fifty years of experience in theindustrial vacuum sector, provides its customers with only high quality professional items designed to best meet the air purification needs of small, medium and large enterprises.

Key advantages of thermal oxidation with regenerative combustors

Adopting a CTR system enables companies not only to comply with environmental regulations, but also to improve their ecological image while reducing overall energy costs. Thus, the regenerative thermal oxidation system represents an investment that combines environmental sustainability and economic efficiency. Additional benefits to consider once regenerative thermal oxidizers are purchased are:

  • High purification efficiency: high temperatures ensure total elimination of volatile organic substances.
  • Optimal energy recovery: ceramic beds recover 90% to 97% of the heat produced, significantly reducing consumption.
  • Operating cost savings: reduced fuel requirements, thanks to heat recovery, lead to significant economic savings.
